Haiti Newsletter - August 2013

The participatory community development process is off to a good start. Architecture for Humanity is working with the Community of Grand Ravine, to create a community action plan for the development of the neighborhood.

Architecture for Humanity's Outreach Team, Mappers and Urban Planners are on site daily conducting surveys, collecting historical data, meeting with community leaders and residents. The preliminary community engagement sessions have been very successful. Architecture for Humanity-Haiti along with the community platform of Grand Ravine, and members of the community, using the participatory methods of data collection, were able to identify priority projects that are most important for the development of the area. As seen in the image above, a woman is voting for a priority project. She chose"Health". But surprisingly, the majority of the votes went to creating pathways. The community of Grand Ravine is actually built along the ravine bed and the surrounding hills. Access can be extremely difficult. Improving the existing pathways and creating safe and practicable ones topped the chart. Since July 26, 2013 the planning team held three (3) community engagement meetings in Grand Ravine. All have been well attended.

  • Haiti Property Law Working Group Manual, vol. 2's first draft is slated for September 2013
  • Strategic planning Workshops are underway at Ile a Vache
  • Bidding for construction of the historical building renovation at Ecole Elie Dubois is being planned

Ecole Baptiste Bon Berger Pele
The construction firm Metayer General Contractor, has been working around the clock since signing the contract to build the sanitary block on the school campus.
The school is located in Cite Soleil, a notorious gang-led neighborhood. The construction firm chose to work at night to get most of the work done quickly and with little hassle. They have taken every security measure to protect the crew and plan to have the work completed on schedule in  five (5) weeks.

The second floor slab of the school building has been poured and the formwork for the main staircase is installed. Designer Sven Kalim is working closely with the construction firm YCF Group SA,  to keep with the integrity of the design. Currently, the construction workers are laying the blocks for the second floor. The final rendering of the school can be found on WorldChanging.
